Chicken Fruit were commissioned by a friend (a different friend to last time! we have two!!) to make a film for her parents, documenting her move from hot, swampy Florida to cooler, greener Oregon.
Our friend knew exactly what story she wanted to show, but gave us quite a lot of flexibility in terms of visual style. We’ve been really enjoying working on our papercraft-style animations with Greenpeace, and some slightly more realistic-looking 3D renders, so we suggested a wood-and-paper mixed media style – a bit like The Magic Roundabout.
Of course, our friend is American, so we couldn’t take advantage of the nostalgia that usually overwhelms British adults over a certain age when they hear the name “Dougal”. To that end, we supported our argument with a render test we did a few years ago in a similar style – one of those things we intended to make into a bigger project, but never got round to it.
This bouncy baker did the trick, and we were free to play with a lovely semi-realistic stop-motion-esque universe for a few weeks.
This was such a lovely project to work on. Our friend’s love of the Pacific Northwest is infectious, and it was a pleasure being able to squeeze in some of her favourite bits of nature – mountains, mushrooms, goats and, of course, dragons.
